Exsultet!

The work for wind orchestra with distant brass quartet was composed on the occasion of the 1300th anniversary of Gengenbach Abbey for the Gengenbach Town Band and is structured as a grand double fugue with three counterpoints. In this case, the two themes share the counterpoints throughout large sections of the piece, until, in the finale, the themes finally meet—accompanied by the principal counterpoint.”

Description

Exultet! In English: Illuminate! This statement fits the Gengenbach monastery in two significant ways. It is well known for its scriptorium, where books were written and preserved over a millennium ago. One of the most precious surviving manuscripts is the intricately decorated copy of the Exultet, the Easter text. Even as an atheist, the Easter Vigil remains a memorable experience: the lighting of all candles, the powerful surge of the organ, and the ringing of every sound-producing element within the building.

The second reason is the fundamental significance of knowledge, then and now. Knowledge is the key to equality—a truth already understood during the monastery’s founding. Immense sums were spent not only on acquiring knowledge but on its preservation. Back then, the means to distribute such wisdom were limited, but every religious service also served as a vehicle for spreading understanding, even if only in the form of basic societal conventions.

In the age of telecommunications, access to information has become easier than ever for the general public. One might assume that religious services are now obsolete. However, the unrestricted flow of information has also led to an overwhelming flood of misinformation. Sorting through this and discussing knowledge in a modern and meaningful way—this, I believe, is one of the great challenges facing today’s churches.

Yet, established institutions tend to be slow-moving. We see this within ourselves—each year of experience makes it harder to accept new impulses and integrate them into our worldview. May the Church continue to illuminate humanity, but may it also allow itself to be illuminated by the people.
